My Lit Box Reveal: Whiskey & Ribbons

March 9, 2018

“We have to recognise that there cannot be relationships unless there is commitment, unless there is loyalty, unless there is love, patience, persistence.” ― Cornel West

How many of us make promises hoping we’ll never have to make good on them? In Whiskey & Ribbons, you will witness what happens when someone reaches this crossroad and the conflict it presents.

A lot of the books I read are about Black men and women and are very often rooted in trauma, from which I never shy away. But after reading so many of these books, it leaves me longing for stories about our everyday, ordinary lives when racism and other forms of oppression aren’t front and center. Cue Evangeline, Eamon, and Dalton.

Whiskey & Ribbons is a love story where boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy marries girl, and they start a family, but that is only the beginning. Each page will reveal a beautiful story of love, loss, and loyalty with characters that will stay with you long after the book is done. The love and commitment displayed in this book encouraged me to highlight the things I found good in sweet in this month’s box.

The owner of Poppy & Pinecone and friend of author Leesa Cross-Smith herself made these adorable, custom Whiskey & Ribbons buttons featuring a piece of sheet music from Clair de Lune, a song mentioned in the book.

The commitment displayed in this book is admirable and beautiful. Evangeline and Eamon are committed to their marriage. Eamon is committed to his career. Dalton and Eamon are committed to their friendship, so much that when they make promises, you know their word is their bond. I included these pink promise charms that you can share with someone you’d promise anything.

Maybe you can blame it on my latest Harry Potter obsession, but when I saw this bookmark from Wonderflies, I thought it would be a perfect fit. Evangeline faces some challenges in this story that could break the strongest of us, but I like to think that knowing happiness still exists helped her fight her way back.

Lastly, how could we not pay homage to the title of the novel? Your box includes a whiskey-scented travel candle from Broken Top Candle. No spoilers from me, so I’ll let you read the novel and figure out what the title means.

I remember reading this book, late at night, unable to put it down because I had to see how this story ended. I needed to know what happened to each character I was introduced to and I wish you the same experience. I wanted to read about ordinary Black life and was gifted an extraordinary story I hope you enjoy as well.

Until next time.
