#currentlyreading Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacquelin #currentlyreading Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson and I am in awe of how she uses free verse to tell the story of her childhood. This story takes you from Ohio to South Carolina to New York and you're introduced to her parents, grandparents, siblings, and members of these communities along the way. History is unfolding in the background of this story and it's fascinating to witness this from the perspective of a small child in the midst of it. Have you read Brown Girl Dreaming? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments below! 👇🏾

In our last post, it was great to see fiction book In our last post, it was great to see fiction books recommended as go-to resources to learn more about what it is like to be Black in this country and the challenges we face. The discussion brought to mind a previous #MyLitBox pick, American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson. This novel follow Marie Mitchell as she attmepts to build a career with the FBI while navigating the obstacles her race and gender present. What are some other fiction titles you'd recommend that explore what it means to be Black in America?

Thinking of James Balwin and his work is a source Thinking of James Balwin and his work is a source of both awe and sadness. Awe because of the keen ability of his writings from years ago to still be relevant today, finding new readers every day. Sadness because the issues he lent his voice to then are the same issues we battle today. But, like him, we fight on and continue to do the work.

In My Lit Box's bio, you'll find a link that will direct you to a Google Sheets file listing resources you can contribute to so various #BlackLivesMatter organizations and other activist organizations leading the fight for justice can continue to do this very important work. This battle will not be won overnight. It is a marathon, not a race. But we all can play a part.

There are so many books depicting the loss of Blac There are so many books depicting the loss of Black life at the hands of an overzealous police officer who chose not to protect and serve but rather to cause more harm. What a world it would be if these instances were confined to the pages of books of fiction and not real life. Or better yet, nowhere at all.

I woke up to see that #MyLitBox has some new follo I woke up to see that #MyLitBox has some new followers (welcome!) so I figured now would be a good time to re-introduce myself. My name is Sanura, and I am the owner and founder of #MyLitBox. Until December 2019, My Lit Box was a book subscription box committed to celebrating writers of color but what My Lit Box has always been and will continue to be, is a platform that uplifts writers of color and I commit to this mission unapologetically. I hope the content you see here entertains, educates, serves as a balm in painful times, and as long as you need this space, it will be here for you! xoxo Sanura | đź“·: @doreanraye

Do you ever sit back and think, "Wow! Books are FR Do you ever sit back and think, "Wow! Books are FREE to access at the library!" During this time I'm eternally grateful to the @lapubliclibrary for making books such as Ayesha At Last by @uzmajalaluddin available with just a few clicks. I was in the mood for something not too heavy and this novel was perfect! In this story, you meet Ayesha, Khalid, and their family and friends as they navigate love, family dynamics, their faith, and tradition. If you have yet to read it, add it to your #TBR list and enjoy! But if you have read it before, let me know what you think in the comments below! 👇🏾
